Merchant Navy- The Past and Present

Merchant Navy- The  Past and Present

In Olden times, Captain was the owner of the ship and the navigators depended only on wind and current to sail the ships.  They tried to carry as much as cargos they can carry so that they could earn maximum profit. There were no facilities to predict weather warnings during heavy seas and cyclones; thereby many ships and lives lost at sea during these periods. The lack of specialised training invited many accidents and most of them were never noticed by the outside world.
Moreover, no one bothered about them because most of them were not accounted, as they were included with criminals or slaves. Slaves were used as cheap manpower in those times even criminals who took asylum onboard ship were utilised for mutual benefits.
The technology was grown along with the great demand of the time. The ship took gigantic shape to carry great volume of bulk, oils and passengers. Large Ferries cruises around the world carrying passengers and tourists. A separate chapter has been included, to take You to the world of shipping.
The Maritime laws prevailed during the past and the origin of International Maritime Organisation sets various standards to ensure ‘Safety of Life at Sea’. The adequate training has been made mandatory to all level of officers and crew. Professional and Competitive examinations are conducted to meet the standard to permit only qualified and experienced seaman to work onboard. Thereby various courses and examinations are conducted for Navigators, Marine Engineers, Electrical Officers, Crew and Chief Cooks etc. These courses are conducted according to STCW code.
Flag State and Port State Control Inspections were tightened to eliminate substandard ships as well as untrained Seafarers.
